How to Get Admission in IIT Madras?

IIT Madras is one of the most popular IITs in India. Every year, many students apply for admission to this institute. The most common way to get into IIT Madras is through the JEE Advanced exam. But there are also other entrance exams for different courses like MTech, MSc, MBA, and design programs. Let’s look at each route in detail.

1) Through JEE Advanced (Most Common Route)

If you want to join the BTech program at IIT Madras, you must clear the JEE Advanced exam. This is a national-level exam held every year. Here’s the complete step-by-step process:

How to Get Admission in IIT Madras Through JEE Advanced

Step 1: Clear JEE Main

Before you can appear for JEE Advanced, you must first qualify in JEE Main. JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). To be eligible for JEE Advanced, you must either score at least 75% marks in your Class 12 board exams (65% for SC/ST) or be in the top 20 percentile of your respective board.  In addition, you need to score above the JEE Main cutoff percentile decided by NTA. This cutoff varies each year depending on the difficulty level of the exam and overall student performance. Generally, the cutoff percentile for the Common Rank List (CRL) is around 90 to 95, which usually corresponds to 85–100 marks out of 300 in the exam.

Step 2: Qualify for JEE Advanced

After clearing JEE Main, you must register for JEE Advanced. This exam is conducted by one of the IITs every year. The syllabus includes advanced topics from Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. The exam tests your understanding, application skills, and speed. You need a high rank in JEE Advanced to get into IIT Madras, especially for top branches like Computer Science.

Step 3: Get a Good Rank in JEE Advanced

Getting a good rank is very important. For general category students, you usually need a rank under 150 to get Computer Science at IIT Madras. Other branches have higher rank cutoffs, but competition is still tough. The cutoff varies each year based on exam difficulty, number of students, and seat availability.

Step 4: Participate in JoSAA Counseling

Once you get your JEE Advanced rank, you must register for JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling. During this process, you can choose your preferred IITs and branches. JoSAA releases mock allotments to help you guess which seat you may get. Based on your rank and preferences, a seat will be allotted. You can choose to accept it, float for a better option, or withdraw.

Entrance Exams for IIT Madras Admission Other Than JEE

Even if you don’t take the JEE, you can still study at an IIT by appearing for other entrance exams. These exams are mostly for postgraduate courses or design programs. Below are the most popular entrance exams for IIT admissions that do not require JEE scores.

1) M.Tech (Master of Technology) – Through GATE

If you have completed or are in your final year of a B.Tech or B.E. degree, you can apply for M.Tech programs at IIT Madras through the GATE exam. GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is one of the most well-known exams for postgraduate engineering admissions.

GATE tests your understanding of engineering and science subjects. The exam includes two types of questions – multiple choice (MCQ) and numerical answer type (NAT). You need to choose the paper based on your undergraduate subject.

Once the GATE results are out, IITs use your score to shortlist candidates for admission to M.Tech programs. Each IIT sets its own cutoff marks. Some IITs may also conduct interviews or written tests after GATE. GATE scores are also valid for jobs in public sector units (PSUs), making it useful even beyond IIT admissions.

2) M.Sc (Master of Science) – Through JAM

If you have a B.Sc or are studying in your final year, you can apply for an M.Sc program at an IIT Madras through the JAM exam. JAM stands for Joint Admission Test for M.Sc and is conducted every year by one of the IITs on a rotating basis. JAM allows you to apply for M.Sc in subjects like:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Biotechnology
  • Geology
  • Mathematical Statistics

The exam includes three types of questions – multiple choice questions (MCQ), numerical answer type (NAT), and multiple select questions (MSQ). It checks your subject knowledge in detail.

After the exam, IITs release cutoff marks. Based on your score, you can apply to different IITs through a centralized counseling process. You can fill in your preferred courses and institutes. Seats are allotted based on your rank and choices. JAM is a great option if you are from a pure science background and want to join IITs for higher education and research in science.

3) MBA (Master of Business Administration) – Through CAT

If you have a bachelor’s degree in any stream and want to study business or management, you can apply for MBA programs at IIT Madras . The admission is based on the CAT exam – Common Admission Test.

CAT is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), but many IITs also accept CAT scores for their MBA programs. Top IITs offering MBA include:

  • IIT Delhi (Department of Management Studies)
  • IIT Bombay (Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management)
  • IIT Kharagpur (Vinod Gupta School of Management)
  • IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, and others

CAT tests your skills in Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, and Verbal Ability. After you get your CAT score, IITs shortlist candidates for the next round.

The selection process usually includes:

  • Group Discussion (GD) or Written Ability Test (WAT)
  • Personal Interview (PI)

Final selection is based on your CAT score, academic background, work experience (if any), and interview performance. MBA programs at IITs are highly respected and offer good placement opportunities.

4) Humanities & Social Sciences (HSEE for M.A.)

If you are interested in subjects like economics, sociology, history, or philosophy, you can apply for the HSEE exam to join the MA program at IIT Madras. HSEE stands for Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination.

It is conducted only by IIT Madras and is open to students who have completed their Class 12. Through this exam, you can join the 5-Year Integrated M.A. program in:

  • Development Studies
  • English Studies
  • Economics (newly introduced in recent years)

The HSEE exam has two parts:

  • Part I: Multiple-choice questions based on English, analytical reasoning, quantitative ability, and general studies.
  • Part II: Essay writing to test your writing and thinking skills.

The program is designed for students who want to pursue careers in civil services, academics, policy-making, media, or international organizations. The course is interdisciplinary and combines humanities, social science, data analysis, and public policy.

This is a unique IIT course where students with strong humanities interest can enter directly after Class 12, without any engineering background or JEE.
